John 1:4 (NIV) - Life is found in Jesus

“In him [Jesus] was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” (John 1:4; NIV; note added by me)

True life is found in Jesus.

The Bible tells us that in Jesus was life. And His life was the light of all mankind.

In John 3:16, we read: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (NIV; emphasis added by me)

Jesus gives eternal life to all who believe in Him and the work He did on the cross, forever reconciling those who believe to God, and granting them not only access to an eternity with God in heaven, but also an intimate relationship with God every single day.

Jesus also gives life and light every day for His beloved sheep. When the world around us is dark and hopeless, we find the light we need in Jesus. When we’ve lost all joy for life, Jesus reinvigorates us not only with the strength to carry on, but also renewed joy and a love for life.

Jesus is the light of creation

In Genesis 1:2-3, we read: “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (NIV)

But we also read that God didn’t create the sun and moon and stars until the fourth day (see Genesis 1:14-19), yet the verses above are on the first day and speak of light.

Jesus says that He is the light of the world (see John 8:12).

In the verses preceding John 1:4, we read the following:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:1-3; NIV)

Jesus is the Word (see John 1:14). Nothing was made without Him. And just like we read in Genesis 1:1 that In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (NIV), we read in John chapter 1 that Jesus was with God in the beginning.

All life we see around us is there because of Jesus. And all the ones who are redeemed and have eternal life have it because of Him.

Jesus is found in the entire Bible. He is the Son of God who was and is and is to come (Revelation 1:8).

Have you received eternal life? Don’t wait. Today is the day of salvation.
